Tayport Heath is located on the mouth of the Firth of Tay. From here a system of sand dunes stretches all the way along the shore to Tentsmuir Point, bounded by the River Tay on one side and fringed by the forest on the other. In recent years we have gradually been clearing the trees and scrub which had taken hold on this site to allow the dune heath to recover to its natural state. We have left small patches of alder, willow and birch as important habitats for butterflies and other insects.
This is a great place to look for wildlife and to take in the spectacular views across the Tay. Look for heather, wild rose and cross-leaved heath growing on the dune heath and keep an eye out for the many birds on the shore including oystercatchers, curlew, redshank and eider duck.
